Trait #5: Preference for Multitasking

Neurodiversity Seeds Business Opportunities

In my last blog, I covered two more traits: ‘high energy’ and ‘impulsivity’.

In this week’s blog, I'm going to cover the preference for multitasking in a nuerodiverse world and why it's a perfect fit for start-up businesses.

Nuerodiverse Creates From Nothing

Adults with ADHD appear to really enjoy multitasking, even though they aren’t much better at it then the general population.

Author Dale Archer, M.D., writes:

“This strength lends itself perfectly to entrepreneurship because that’s what owners of startups do: juggle many tasks at one time — from sales to R&D, admin, and payroll. When you start something from nothing, you have no choice but to dart from task to task, doing everything for yourself until you can afford enough extra staff and infrastructure to delegate. Creating a new business is tailor-made for those with ADHD.”

Starting a new business can be a daunting task, but for individuals with ADHD or neurodiversity, it can be a perfect fit. These individuals possess unique qualities that can give them an edge in the world of entrepreneurship. And most neurodiverse individuals prefer multitasking. While some view multitasking as a negative attribute, it’s a valuable skill in many ways. Here’s a few reasons why neurodiverse people prefer it:

✔️ Difficulty with Sustained Attention

It can be difficult sustaining attention for most of us nuerodiverse folks, especially on a single task for extended periods of time. Why this alone can lead to multitasking, because it allows being able to switch between tasks which helps maintain our focus for longer periods of time.

✔️ Variety

We find multitasking more engaging and enjoyable which helps us thrive on a variety of tasks and projects because switching between them keeps our brains stimulated.

✔️Greater Efficiency

Multitasking increases productivity and efficiency when working on multiple tasks at once, which has us complete them more quickly and with greater accuracy.

✔️Adaptability

Neurodiverse individuals can switch between tasks seamlessly and adjust to changes in priorities or deadlines without difficulty.

✔️Creativity

Multitasking enhances creativity. When juggling multiple tasks, our brains are stimulated in different ways, which can lead to new and innovative ideas.

Neurodiversity, The Perfect Fit for Start-Ups

Starting a new business is an excellent fit for individuals with ADHD or neurodiversity. Their creativity, hyperfocus, multitasking ability, risk-taking, passion, and energy can give them an edge in the world of entrepreneurship. By leveraging these unique qualities and skills, they can create successful and thriving businesses.

From creativity and innovation, to being laser-focused with multitasking, our drive and passion helps us thrive with purpose. Once we find something that sparks our interest, we're on fire to devote a tremendous amount of time and effort to it.

This a significant advantage in a startup, where the ability to put in long hours and work tirelessly to make the business a success is critical.
